What is a Slot?

A slot is the area between the face-off circles in the offensive zone. There are two types of slots, high and low. The low slot is in front of the goaltender, and the high slot is above the face-off circles. In hockey, the deep slot is defended by the offside winger and a defenceman, while the forwards hover around the area for scoring opportunities. The term slot can be a confusing concept for players who don’t understand the terminology.

The word slot is a late 14c. French word that originally referred to a hollow on the breastbone. It is derived from Old French esclot, but its origin is uncertain. Another possible source is the Old Norse word slod. The meaning of slot was first recorded in the 1520s, and the modern meaning of the word was attributed to a machine in 1888. In the 19th century, it was used to describe a machine where the player can place coins or play other games.

Components are built for reusability. Some patterns are not enforced with a single “normal” component, and props can be excessive. Props are passed large sections of content in addition to other components. Adding a Slot to a component allows the developer to include reusable components without sacrificing the design aesthetic. This component essentially becomes a container for other HTML or components. Its role in defining a pattern becomes apparent when it comes to the application of reusable components.
