Poker is a card game in which players place bets and compete to make the highest five-card hand. It is played with two or more decks of cards, and players can decide whether to include one or more jokers/wild cards. The game can be played by anywhere from two to seven players, although the best games are those with a maximum of six players.

Poker betting is done in a series of rounds, and each player places their bet in turn. When it is your turn, you can either call (put in the same amount as the person before you) or raise your bet to add more money to the pot. You can also fold, meaning you discard your hand and are out of the pot until the next deal.

Position is key in poker, as it gives you information about your opponents’ hands and allows you to make better value bets. You can learn more about this in our guide to Playing in Position.

The most important thing to remember is that poker is a mental intensive game and that you should only play it when you are feeling happy and able to concentrate. If you are not in the right mood, it is likely that your performance will suffer and you may even lose a lot of money. This is why many professional players quit when they feel they are not in the right frame of mind.
