What is a Slot?

Slot

In field and ice hockey, the slot is a rectangular area towards the blue line. The term’slot’ is derived from the Greek verb’sleutetai’, which means “to stretch” or “to stretch out.” The word also has cognate roots in German, where it is a form of Schloss.

Slots are used in many different contexts. Some have more than one type of symbol, while others have a single symbol with multiple meanings. They are also used as a way to keep track of air traffic at busy airports. Depending on the game, a player may have a few different types of symbols in their winning combinations.

A typical slot machine has multiple pay lines. When the player makes a minimum bet, only one line appears on the reels, while a higher bet can play two or three horizontal lines above and below the main pay line. Another option is to play multiple diagonal lines across the reels. This gives the player the illusion of more control, but it also limits the potential winnings.

A computer can have a single slot for the processor, but some have multiple slots for expansion. This makes it possible to add more capabilities to the machine. Some computers have expansion slots for additional storage, such as a second hard drive.
